MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF SUNNY MINDEL AS PRESS SECRETARY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that Sunny Mindel has been appointed Press Secretary. In announcing the appointment, Mayor Giuliani cited Ms. Mindel's extensive communications experience in both the public and private sectors.

"Sunny is a proven communications professional, who brings to this position years of valuable experience in both the public and private sectors -- as a reporter, a writer, and a public relations expert," the Mayor said. "During her tenure as Director of Public Affairs for the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, Sunny demonstrated a keen ability to communicate effectively with the public and the media under the most demanding of circumstances. I am confident those skills will become an asset in her new position, as Sunny works to convey to the public the goals of our Administration's policies and programs."

Ms. Mindel said, "It is an understatement to say that I am honored to serve in the Giuliani Administration, which has not only proved wrong all those who said the City was ungovernable, but whose policies have become a blueprint for urban reform. I look forward to being a part of this talented team."

Prior to serving as the Director of Public Affairs at the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management under the direction of Jerome M. Hauer, Ms. Mindel was Chief Spokesperson and Press Secretary for Mayor Giuliani's highly successful 1997 reelection campaign. She joined the Administration in 1996, as Press Secretary for the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications. Her broadcast experience includes reporting on City Hall for WNYC Television and writing for Lifetime Cable Television. She began her communications career as an advertising copywriter after earning a B.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. The position was previously held by Colleen Roche, who is now working in the private sector.
