MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES RENOVATION OF 69th STREET PIER

Brooklyn To Gain New Waterfront Attraction

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the start of a comprehensive reconstruction of the historic 69th Street Pier in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Long a favorite recreation spot for fisherman and strollers, among others, the pier will be transformed into a modern facility that will offer new recreational amenities and opportunities for all New Yorkers.

"This reconstruction symbolizes my commitment to revitalizing waterfront property throughout the City," said Mayor Giuliani. "The 69th Street Pier reconstruction joins such projects as the Louis Valentino Jr. Pier and Park in Red Hook, the newly constructed East River Bikeway and Esplanade, the Hudson River Park, and the forthcoming development of the St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island and Lower Manhattan Piers in my Administration's continuing efforts to reclaim the waterfront for all New Yorkers. This is a legacy that will benefit New York City for generations to come."

The reconstruction project will be financed with $3 million from City Capital funds and $2 million from the Brooklyn Borough President's office. The project will be managed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC). Improvements to the 600-foot-long pier will include an attractive three-color scoring pattern on the concrete decking, new lighting fixtures, new benches, picnic tables, an information kiosk, dedicated fishing stations with built-in fishing rod holders, and bicycle racks.

While the pier is being renovated for the year-round enjoyment of all New Yorkers, it will also play an important role during the OP SAIL 2000 National Celebration for the Millennium that will take place July 3-9, 2000. This six-day event will attract thousands of ships and boats and tens of thousands of visitors from around the world to New York Harbor.

According to Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Planning, and Administration Randy L. Levine, "The new 69th Street Pier will benefit the surrounding community and will be a prime destination for national and international visitors during OP SAIL 2000. The pier's new facilities will add to the comfort and enjoyment of visitors, and reflect Mayor Giuliani's successful efforts to revitalize New York City's waterfront."

"For decades visitors have come to the 69th Street Pier to fish and to enjoy the spectacular view of the greatest harbor in the world," Michael Carey, Acting President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), said. "The improvements made to the pier will make this prime recreation spot more accessible, more comfortable, and more enjoyable, particularly for families."

EDC is the City's primary vehicle for economic development services. Using its real estate and financing resources, EDC helps develop businesses and create jobs throughout the five boroughs.
