EIGHTY-THREE ACS EMPLOYEES HONORED AT CITY HALL FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND COMMITMENT TO SERVING NYC CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Administration for Children's Services (ACS) Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta today honored 83 ACS employees at a graduation ceremony at City Hall. Each of the honorees received a Masters degree at one of the seven area schools of social work. Of the 83 ACS employees graduating this year, 78 benefited from the $3 million MSW Scholarship program that Mayor Giuliani reinstated this past year. The graduation ceremony not only marks these employees' commitment to continued education but is another step forward in ACS's plan to reform child welfare in New York City and improve services to New York City children and families.

Mayor Giuliani said, "When we created ACS over three years ago, we wanted to turn it into the most professional and accountable agency possible. There's no question that continued education and training are key ingredients in doing just that. Many of the graduates here today benefited from the $3 million MSW scholarship program reinstated last year by this Administration. The MSW program represents the City's commitment to professionalizing child welfare services in New York City. Congratulations to all the graduates for their educational achievements and for helping ACS take a huge step forward in its plan to reform child welfare in New York City."

Commissioner Scoppetta said, "Each and every one of the 83 graduates here today has accomplished an enormous amount on the road to attaining their degrees. It is an honor to be here today to share in all of your success. You have made a wise investment that will benefit not only yourselves, but also the children and families of this City that you will serve throughout your careers in child welfare. My hope is that you feel you have reached a great milestone, because you are certainly changing this agency and making our goal to improve services a reality."

Representatives from the seven local schools of social work, including Adelphi University, Columbia University, Fordham University, Hunter College, Stony Brook University, and Yeshiva University, also attended the event. In addition, 66 field instructors who volunteered to supervise the graduates during field placement were acknowledged for their service during the ceremony.
