MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "LIEUTENANT JOSEPH PETROSINO PARK" TO SATELLITE PARK, LOCATED AT 16TH AVENUE AND 70TH STREET, IN BROOKLYN

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The first bill before me, Introductory Number 507, sponsored by Council Members Golden, Berman, Dear, Abel and Eisland, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Lieutenant Joseph Petrosino Park" to Satellite Park, located at 16th Avenue and 70th Street, in Brooklyn.

Joseph Petrosino was born in Italy in 1860. In 1873, Mr. Petrosino came to the United States and settled in New York City. Four years later he became an American citizen. On October 10, 1883 Joseph Petrosino became New York City's first Italian-American Police Officer.

The Italian Branch of the New York City Police Department was founded in 1905 and Joseph Petrosino was became its leader. In November 1906, the unit was renamed the Italian Legion and Joseph Petrosino was promoted to Lieutenant, becoming the highest-ranking Italian-American officer on any police force in the United States.

In 1909, Joseph Petrosino was shot and killed while conducting an investigation on assignment in Palermo, Italy. His murderers were never apprehended.

In recognition of his dedication, his accomplishments and his ultimate sacrifice, it is fitting that we add the name "Lieutenant Joseph Petrosino Park" to Satellite Park, located at 16th Avenue and 70th Street, in Brooklyn.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
