Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that, according to employment figures released by the New York State Department of Labor, New York City created 5,000 jobs in October. Following last month's creation of 8,300 jobs, the private sector has added almost 73,000 jobs since January. At this pace, the City is on pace to surpass last year's record private sector job growth, when the City created a total of 77,400 private sector jobs. In addition, private sector job gains in the City were up, 2.8% year-over-year, surpassing the U.S. rate of 2.2%.
"With the release of today's job numbers, the City can expect to surpass last year's record job growth," said Mayor Giuliani. "Last year the City experienced its strongest private sector job growth since records were first kept 40 years ago. Since the beginning of the year the City has already created 73,000 new private sector jobs.
"These latest figures continue to demonstrate our City's strong economy and its ability to create jobs," the Mayor continued. "Since January 1994 the City has created over 352,000 new jobs, and today's news further proves that the City's economic renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down. These job numbers again confirm the fact that New York is the City people throughout the world turn to for leadership as the Capital of the World."
