MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT WOULD AMEND THE CITY CHARTER IN RELATION TO AUTHORIZING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXTEND THE DATE OF THE FRANCHISE FOR THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF BUS STOP SHELTERS

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The bill before me is Introductory Number 638, sponsored by Council Members Eisland and McCaffrey. This bill amends the New York City Charter in relation to authorizing the Department of Transportation to extend the date of the franchise for the operation and maintenance of bus stop shelters to December 31, 2000.

This bill would allow DOT to work with the existing franchise to provide for the installation and maintenance of bus stop shelters in the coming year, while ensuring that the City continues to receive revenues from the advertising placed on these shelters.

I will now turn to the bill's sponsors, other elected officials, and then to anyone else who wishes to be heard for or against this legislation.

There being no one else wishing to speak and for reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
