MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF UNION SQUARE "UNION SQUARE SOUTH"

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The last bill before me, Introductory Number 629, sponsored by Council Members Lopez and O'Donovan would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Union Square South" on East 14th Street between Broadway and 4th Avenue, in Manhattan.

Community Board Number 2 in Manhattan has requested this street name change on behalf of the Union Square Community Coalition, the 14th Street-Union Square Business Improvement District, and the Local Development Corporation. This change is being implemented to call attention to the revitalization of the southern border of Union Square.

Therefore, in order to bring this strip into harmony with previously named "Union Square East" and "Union Square West" it is fitting that East 14th Street between Broadway and 4th Avenue be named "Union Square South."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
