Registering Building Cooling Towers

In the wake of the worst outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease in New York City history, the city government is taking proactive measures to prevent such an outbreak from recurring. We are developing a registry of buildings with cooling towers and evaporative condensers - which we've identified as the likely source of the recent outbreak - in order to make sure they are properly maintained and cleaned.

If you live in a building with a cooling tower or evaporative condenser, please ask your building management to register online. All you have to do is copy and paste the message below into an email to your building's management:

Dear building management,

In recent weeks, New York City experienced the largest Legionnaires' Disease outbreak in the city's history, with more than 100 people infected and numerous fatalities. The City has identified cooling towers and evaporative condensers as the most likely source of the disease, and I'm concerned about the possibility of a similar outbreak occurring in our building.

I have recently learned that the City is taking proactive measures to register buildings' cooling towers. For the health, safety, and peace of mind of all the tenants who live in your building and in our community, I'd like you to register our cooling tower and ensure that it is properly maintained. It takes just a few minutes using this online form on the Department of Buildings website:
