The organics collection program allows the Department of Sanitation to collect food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste from residents in select areas and turn it into compost or renewable energy.
Participants will receive:
• Single family homes will receive one small bin and one starter kit
• Buildings with 2-9 apartments will receive one large bin to share and one starter kit per apartment
Starter kits include a small kitchen container. Inside the kit is a brochure, a coupon, and a sticker.
To save room, participants may put leaves and yard waste in a separate container or paper bag and food scraps in the brown organics bin.
Residents participating in the program should place their organic waste curbside according to their neighborhood’s collection schedule.
Make Compost Not Trash Events
Sanitation will be engaging residents in the Brooklyn, BK10 and Queens, Q13 districts to increase participation in the organics collection program.
