Electronic Disposal Information

Starting January 1, 2015, you cannot throw out the following electronics in the trash:

  • TVs
  • Monitors
  • Computers
  • Laptops
  • Computer Mice
  • Keyboards
  • Small servers
  • Printers/scanners
  • Tablets/e-readers
  • MP3 Players
  • VCRs/DVDs/DVR players
  • Fax machines
  • Video game consoles
  • Cable/satellite boxes

There are several ways you can recycle unwanted e-waste. Manufacturers of computers, televisions, and other electronics are required to accept their products for recycling under New York State law and provide free take-back programs.

You can also dispose of your unwanted electronics for free through:

  • Drop-off programs at retailers and sanitation locations
  • Community recycling events
  • E-cycleNYC pickup program for apartment buildings
  • Mail-back programs
  • Donating or selling working electronics

If you are a resident of Brooklyn, Staten Island, or Western Queens, you can also request free curbside pickup appointments through the Department of Sanitation's e-waste pilot program.
