Carshare Pilot Program

The Carshare Pilot Program reserves parking spaces in municipal parking facilities and on streets in select neighborhoods for participating carshare companies. The program will provide New Yorkers with convenient, reliable access to carshare.

Carsharing has the potential to:

  • Shorten searches for parking spaces, by ensuring that carshare users have a reserved space
  • Reduce personal car ownership, which benefits all drivers in a neighborhood by lowering the number of cars competing for spaces
  • Lower transportation costs by providing reliable access to a car without annual car insurance and maintenance bills
  • Improve access to services, friends and family, and recreation by making a car available when you need one
  • Reduce congestion and improve air quality, since carshare users drive less than those who own their own car

The program will last for two years so residents have enough time to adjust their mobility patterns and reassess their car ownership decisions. During this time, the Department of Transportation (DOT) will collect data and issue a report each year about pilot's progress.

At the end of the two-year period, the DOT will evaluate the effectiveness of the program so it can determine the best long-term approach to carshare.

To participate, you must sign up directly with Zipcar or Enterprise CarShare.
