"New Virtual Classroom Course."
The Health Code requires food service establishments to have a supervisor of food operations with a Food Protection Certificate on duty during all hours of operation to supervise food preparation and processing. The NYC Health Academy trains individuals in food protection practices to ensure the safety of the food served in New York City's food establishments.
At this time the in-person Food Protection Course is not being offered. The Health Academy now offers the 5-day food protection course and final exam in a virtual classroom setting.
Frequency and Duration: The course is 15 hours long and is given over five days and each daily session is three hours long. The course starts on Monday and ends on Friday. When Monday is a City holiday, classes will then begin on Tuesday and end on Friday, each daily session will then be three hours and 45 minutes long.
The course and exam will be offered via the WebEx application. You can register for the course here. When you pass the final exam, you will be issued a temporary Food Protection Certificate. Currently, the virtual class and final exam are available in English and Spanish.
You may also still complete the free, self-paced online food protection course. The online course is offered in English, Spanish and Chinese. The course is self-paced and consists of 15 lessons. You must complete each lesson and pass a quiz before moving on to the next lesson. The final exam, which includes a Food Protection Course Review, is available virtually for those who have completed the online course. The exam will be given via the WebEx application. Please log in to your account to register. There is a $24 fee to take the final exam. When you pass the online final exam, you will be issued a temporary Food Protection Certificate.
Currently, the course review and final exam are available in English only.
To avoid gaps in supervision, the Health Department recommends that restaurants have more than one staff person with a Food Protection Certificate.
This course is open to the public.
Replacement Requests On a temporary basis, the Health Academy can provide a confirmation email to verify your food protection certificate credentials. If you are in need of a replacement certificate, email firstname.lastname@example.org with “FPC replacement” in the subject field. If you took the class more than 10 years ago you must retake the course and pass the final exam.
