Gas Authorization--Restaurant Equipment

Apply

Before you submit your application

  • 1

FDNY inspects and regulates the installation of required range hoods for restaurants, cafeterias and other commercial cooking establishments. Installation of range hoods and other required fire supression/ventilation equipment must be done by a licensed professional.

    • 2

FDNY regulations require a certain number, type, and placement of portable fire extinguishers in your place of business, depending on the building, business type, and other factors.

        Steps to apply in person:

      • 1

A commercial kitchen owner must hire a number of licensed professionals to install gas pipes, restaurant cooking equipment and fire suppression systems. The first step in the process of getting gas service activated is to hire a registered architect or licensed engineer to submit complete plans for the system installation.

        • 2

Once plans have been approved, a licensed Master Plumber and licensed Fire Suppression Piping Contractor must be hired to install the gas piping, equipment, and Ansul system so that FDNY can inspect it. Note: Pizza ovens do not require an Ansul system. FDNY will also inspect the required portable fire extinguishers at this time.

          • 3

Upon successful FDNY inspection, a letter from the Fire Department (FDNY) must be given to the DOB, certifying that each Ansul valve installed has passed all required inspections.

            • 4

Upon receipt of this letter, the business owner's Master Plumber must call the DOB for an inspection. All gas cooking equipment must be fully installed and inspected by the DOB Plumbing Unit before the DOB will authorize a utility company to provide gas supply services.

              • 5

Upon successful inspection by the DOB, and receipt of FDNY Ansul valve approval letters, the Gas Authorization is approved via an online system that gas-supplying utility companies can access to confirm compliance.

                • 6

Gas authorization does not automatically begin gas services. The business owner or their authorized representative must still contact the utility service to arrange to set the gas meter, create a service account, and coordinate the service start date.
