Portable Fire Extinguisher Requirements

About

Fire Department City
Portable fire extinguishers are an important part of an overall fire safety program. FDNY regulations require a certain number, type, and placement of portable fire extinguishers in your place of business, depending on the building, business type, and other factors. These requirements are detailed in Section 15-02 of Title 3 of the Rules of the City of New York.

The type of fire extinguisher you will use depends on what is burning, and thus depends on your unique business. For more information, and specific retail and restaurant requirements, see the Fire Extinguishers link, below.

You can purchase fire extinguishers from a retail store or from a company certified by the FDNY, as identified in the Company Approval Report, below. These certified companies are required to maintain and refill your extinguishers.
