State Labor, Department of

Non-profit organizations must offer unemployment insurance.

This insurance provides temporary income for workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. They must meet specific requirements.

Non-profits must provide unemployment insurance as soon as
  • more than $1000 of renumeration is paid in a single day, or
  • Whenever more than four workers are employed on one day in each of 20 weeks in a calendar year.
The New York State Department of Labor decides if a business must pay unemployment insurance. The Department also decides if employees qualify.
