Statement by Mayor de Blasio on the Senate's Vote on Speed Cameras

April 30, 2014

“With the Senate’s vote today, our lawmakers have put forward a powerful commitment to protect our children from dangerous speeding cars on our city’s streets. This bill will bring us a critical step closer to achieving this administration’s goal of zero pedestrian deaths in New York City.

“We have an obligation to protect our children’s safety – and these additional speed cameras will play a key role in our efforts to reduce pedestrian deaths in school slow zones by changing driver behavior to make us all safer. Combined with Vision Zero initiatives through the NYPD, the Department of Transportation and the Taxi and Limousine Commission, speed cameras will serve as powerful reminders to drivers across the five boroughs that speeding will not be tolerated on our city’s streets.

“I applaud Co-Leader Klein, Co-Leader Skelos, Democratic Leader Stewart-Cousins and the entire Senate for putting our children first, and I look forward to working with Governor Cuomo to quickly enact this vital legislation.”
