Joint Statement from Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, Public Advocate James and Council Member Kallos on the Congressional Resolution on Cities Setting Up Retirement Plans for Private-Sector Workers

March 30, 2017

“We are deeply disappointed that Congress has voted to overturn the Department of Labor rule providing a safe harbor for us to create retirement savings plans for private sector employees.  Fewer than half of all working New Yorkers have access to a plan that can help them save for their retirement years and this vote does little more than block them - the majority of whom are women and people of color - from securing their futures.

“During these uncertain times, now more than ever we have a responsibility to help those working hard for very little return. Yet once again, Congressional Republicans voted to do the exact opposite. We urge President Trump to remember what he claims to have campaigned on - helping working people - and not sign this resolution.”
