Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg Signs Legislation Renaming Eighty-three Streets

December 21, 2004

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 471-A, sponsored by Council Members Addabbo, Jr., Avella, Barron, Brewer, Clarke, Comrie, deBlasio, Dilan, Fidler, Gallagher, Gennaro, Gentile, Gerson, Gioia, Jackson, James, Jennings, Koppell, Lanza, Liu, Lopez, Martinez, McMahon, The Speaker, Monserrate, Moskowitz, Nelson, Oddo, Palma, Perkins, Quinn, Recchia, Jr., Reed, Sanders, Stewart, Weprin, and Boyland.

“This bill renames eighty-three streets and public spaces throughout the City.  The first thirty-two names that I will read are streets renamed in honor of those who died on September 11th 2001.  Although a modest gesture, this local law demonstrates the City’s commitment to never forget those who perished that day.

“I will now read the first thirty-two streets, named in honor of civilians, firefighters and police officers who died on September 11th.

“The remaining 51 names represent individuals or entities that are being honored for their lifetime accomplishments.  While it is not possible to describe the reason each individual or entity is deserving of a street name change, each Council Member who submitted a name presented a detailed justification for this honor.

“I will now read the list of the next 51 names to be honored.
