Statement of Mayor Bloomberg on City Council Passage of Legislation Creating Thousands of Electric Car Ready Parking Spaces

December 10, 2013

In State of the City Address, Mayor Proposed Creation of 10,000 Parking Spaces to Power Electric Vehicles

“We’ve set a course to make our city a national leader in another new technology – electric vehicles. This legislation is another step towards building critical infrastructure needed to give more New Yorkers the opportunity to make the switch from gas-powered to electric cars by creating 10,000 electric ready spaces over approximately the next ten years. This year, we have been testing new curbside vehicle chargers that allow drivers to fill up their battery in as little as 30 minutes – as opposed to the normal 8 hours – and testing all-electric taxi cabs. City government now operates a fleet of nearly 600 electric cars and we’ve installed 120 electric plug-in stations for City government vehicles across the city. We’ve been committed to making our city ready for the future, and this is the latest example of how we’ve worked with the City Council to make New York City sustainable for the long term.”
