Mayor de Blasio Lights City Hall Teal in Honor of Ovarian Cancer Month

NEW YORK— To mark the end of September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, on Friday, September 30, 2016, Mayor de Blasio, Council Member Rafael Espinal and T.E.A.L. will light City Hall teal.

“We talk about breast, lung and skin cancer, but we rarely talk about ovarian cancer – yet it is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray, Honorary Chair of the Commission on Gender Equity. “To fight this terrible disease, we need to talk about it. By lighting City Hall teal, we hope to raise awareness that nearly 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, and by working together we can help lower the number. Thank you T.E.A.L. for your partnership in this effort and your continued work for women’s health,”

“This September we honor the thousands of women and families, like my own, who have been affected by ovarian cancer. My mother would have turned 64 this month had she not lost in her own battle to this silent, but deadly disease four years ago. I know first hand the impact of this cancer, and the need to raise awareness among women of the vague, but persistent symptoms that are often so difficult to recognize. That is why I am so proud to be a fierce ally in the fight to address this health issue and why I have worked with T.E.A.L.® over the past few months to light City Hall. I applaud T.E.A.L.®  for the amazing work they do, as well as, Mayor Bill de Blasio for recognizing the importance of this symbolic action,” said Council Member Rafael Espinal.
