ACS Celebrates Reunified Families at 2nd Annual Better Together Event at Chelsea Piers

Over 100 families participated in our second annual “Better Together: A Celebration of Families” event at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan on Saturday, June 10th. This event celebrates Family Reunification Month and the accomplishments of parents who overcome challenges to reunify safely and successfully with their children placed in foster care.

Parents and their children enjoyed a day of fun at Chelsea Piers with rock climbing, soccer, and a raffle. Speakers included Commissioner David Hansell, Deputy Commissioner of Family Permanency Services Julie Farber, and partner RISE Magazine’s Jeannette Vega. In addition to parents, the event also featured the many individuals who help make reunification possible including Parent Advocates, caseworkers and social workers.

The majority of children who enter foster care are able to return home to their families. Last year 2,500 children were reunified and ACS is committed to ensuring families stay together. ACS is spearheading strategies to better support reunification including revamping our training on family visiting. Read more about strategies in our Foster Care Blueprint Update.

National Reunification Month is celebrated in June throughout the country to recognize the people and efforts that make it possible for families to stay together.
