DYFJ Youth and Carnegie Hall Musicians in Concert

Youth in non-secure detention group homes and musicians from Carnegie Hall Weill Musical Institute (WMI) performed at a concert held at the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) Children’s Center in New York City on Thursday, February 9, 2012. The concert marked the end of a two-week choral project during which the young people worked with professional musicians from WMI to compose musical pieces which they performed to the delight of family, friends, and guests. The youth were drawn from several of the non-secure facilities through which ACS provides care for alleged delinquent youths who have been arrested are awaiting disposition of their cases. While in ACS care, the youths receive therapeutic services, responsive health care, and services to promote educational achievement and successful re-entry into their communities. The choral project is a part of the collaboration between the ACS and WMI to create a broad range of engaging music and education programs for youth in detention.
