High School Goal Weekend 2013
On September 28 and 29, over 240 7th and 8th graders in foster care, adopted youth from foster care and their parents and caregivers attended High School Goal Weekend (HSGW), where they received information and assistance from volunteers from ACS and the Department of Education (DOE) on how to choose a high school that best meets their needs. Benita Miller, Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Family Permanency Services welcomed the participants and ACS Commissioner Ronald E. Richter, encouraged them to stay committed to their education. “By being here today, you are getting a head start on shaping your own future by investing in your educational success,” he told the students.
Commissioner Richter thanked Himan Brown Charitable Trust for sponsoring the event, as well as foster care agencies, foster parents and parents for dedication in getting the students to the event, guiding them along the way, and making sure that they receive the most out of High School Goal weekend. He also thanked the ACS and DOE volunteers for their part in ensuring the success of HSGW 2013.
The event provided the students with additional support for the DOE high school planning and application process. Kathleen Hoskins, ACS Director of the Office of Education Support and Policy Planning gave a presentation on the high school selections process which was followed by one-on-one counseling sessions with DOE Enrollment staff to assist students in selecting a high school and completing their DOE high school application. Trained ACS volunteers guided the students through the Citywide High School Fair running concurrently, and facilitated conversations with New York City high school representatives.
