Administration for Children’s Services Celebrates New York’s Kindest During National Foster Care Month

22 Dedicated Foster Parents Honored Throughout the Month of May

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) is honoring National Foster Care Month by launching a Foster Parent of the Year Photo Recognition Program to recognize a group of outstanding New York City foster families. Twenty-two exemplary foster parents, nominated by one of ACS’ foster care agencies, have been chosen for demonstrating extraordinary character, integrity, support and leadership skills in working with their agency, community and other foster parents. They have also displayed a commitment to those children that are typically hard to place--pregnant and parenting mothers, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth and children with special needs.

“National Foster Care Month is a wonderful time to celebrate the critical and selfless work of New York City’s foster families,” said ACS Commissioner Ronald E. Richter. “We are proud to recognize such an exceptional group of foster parents. These foster parents set an example for all New Yorkers by opening their homes and their hearts so that young people can realize their full potential.”

The dedicated group of nominees were treated to a professional photo shoot, complete with make-up and wardrobe styling. As part of the month long celebration, ACS will feature each foster family on the agency’s website to showcase the family’s photo shoot and personal success stories. “May is also an important time for us to recruit new foster and adoptive parents for the many New York City children who need safe and loving homes,” said Commissioner Richter. “I encourage all New Yorkers to consider helping a child in need by becoming a foster parent. Fostering a child or youth can provide extraordinary satisfaction.”

Those interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent should call the parent recruitment hotline, (212) 676-WISH (outside of NYC: (877) 676-WISH), to obtain an informational packet.

An orientation can be scheduled during the call or upon receipt of the packet.

ACS will host a foster parent informational forum on Friday, May 18, 2012, 10:30am-1:30pm at 150 William Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10038. Those interested in attending should call the hotline to register.
