New York City Infant Safe Sleep Initiative purple text logo with A C S logo on the bottom and orange circle logo for Celebrating 10 years of action

October is Safe Sleep Awareness Month. This year, the NYC Infant Safe Sleep Initiative proudly marks a decade of action focused on protecting New York City babies from preventable sleep-related infant deaths.

The Initiative is a diverse, public/private partnership dedicated to safeguarding infants while they sleep by using evidence-based practices, policies, and guidelines developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2015, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio expanded the scope of this life-saving work by funding a dedicated team of professionals to spearhead citywide outreach, training, and awareness efforts designed to reach more parents and caregivers with safe sleep messages. This investment resulted in the formation of a vibrant coalition led by NYC Children’s Services, and involving 130 city, state, and community partners – all focused on one goal: ensuring that no family suffers the devastating loss of a child during sleep.

Michele Maye, Executive Director of the NYC Infant Safe Sleep Initiative shares more about this life-saving work and planned activities for October 2020.
