National Crane Certification Requirements for NYC Hoisting Machine Licenses

For a Class A Hoist Machine Operator License (new or renewal) you must pass the appropriate National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) or the Crane Institute Certification (CIC) written and practical examinations for the type of machinery you intend to operate. Hoisting Machine Operator Class A Certification Requirements

National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO)

To obtain or renew a Class A Hoist Machine Operator license, you must show a valid NCCCO certification card with at minimum four (4) of the following:

  • Mobile cranes, large telescopic boom cranes (swing cab) (TLL)
  • Mobile cranes, small telescopic boom cranes (fixed cab) (TSS)
  • Lattice boom truck crane (LBT)
  • Lattice boom crawler crane (LBC)

OR

Crane Institute Certification (CIC)

To obtain a Class A Hoist Machine Operator license, you must show a valid CIC certification card with at minimum four (4) of the following:

  • Telescoping boom crane – 21 to 75 tons (fixed cab)
  • Telescoping boom crane – over 75 tons (rotating cab)
  • Lattice boom crawler
  • Lattice boom carrier

Additional Exam for Tower Cranes

In addition to showing a valid NCCCO or CIC certification card containing the four above certifications, to operate a tower crane, the applicant must additionally show a valid NCCCO certification card containing the following certification:

  • Tower crane (TWR)

NOTE: Should an applicant or licensee wish to operate a friction crane, they must have passed at least one of the certification exams on a friction crane 1 RCNY §104-09.


Hoisting Machine Operator Class B Certification Requirements

To obtain class B Hoist Machine Operator, you must show a valid NCCO certification card for all of the following:

  • Mobile cranes, large telescopic boom cranes (swing cab) (TLL)
  • Mobile cranes, small telescopic boom cranes (fixed cab) (TSS)
  • Lattice boom truck crane (LBT)
  • Lattice boom crawler crane (LBC)
  • Tower crane (TWR)

NOTE: The applicant or licensee must have passed at least one of the certification exams on a friction crane as per 1 RCNY §104-09.


Hoisting Machine Operator Class C Certification Requirements

National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO)

To obtain a Class C1 license, you must show a valid CCO certification card for both of the following:

  • Mobile cranes, large telescopic boom cranes (swing cab) (TLL)
  • Mobile cranes, small telescopic boom cranes (fixed cab) (TSS)

To obtain a Class C2 license, you must show a valid CCO certification card for the following:

  • Boom Truck – Fixed Cab (BTF)

To obtain a Class C3 license, you must show a valid CCO certification card for:

  • Boom Truck – Fixed Cab (BTF)

OR

Crane Institute Certification (CIC)

To obtain a Class C1 license, you must show a valid CIC certification card for both of the following:

  • Telescoping boom cranes, 21-75 tons (swing cab)
  • Telescoping boom cranes, under 21 tons (fixed cab)

To obtain a Class C2 license, you must show a valid CIC certification card for the following:

  • Telescoping boom cranes, under 21 tons (fixed cab)

To obtain a Class C3 license, you must show a valid CIC certification card for:

  • Telescoping boom cranes, under 21 tons (fixed cab)
NOTE: Should an applicant or licensee wish to operate a friction crane, they must pass at least one of the certification exams on a friction crane 1 RCNY §104-09.
