Skilled Trades Project Requirements:
Standpipe: Allowable Work Without A Registered Design Professional Submitting Construction Documents For Department Approval

Permit requirements are tied to the scope of work and work type of a project, and the permits are regulated by nature of work, licensing and registration requirements for the work to be performed. For example, certain standpipe work can only be performed by a Licensed Fire Suppression Contractor (LFSC) with a specialized license to perform the required work, and permits are issued to registered trade license holders.

When a standpipe project exceeds the work allowed under the two categories of Limited Plumbing Alterations and Limited Standpipe Alterations work listed below, a Registered Design Professional must submit construction plans to the Department for approval in order to obtain a work permit.

Limited Plumbing Alterations

Chapter 1 of the Administrative Code under §28-101.5 provides a definition of Limited Plumbing Alterations, to specify repair to plumbing or fuel gas piping system that is limited in scope under two (2) categories:

Category 1

Has cost and time period limitation - $35,000 cost limitation per building including appliance and labor in any 12 month period – only the following can be done:

  1. Standpipe Piping and Parts.  In-kind replacement of piping and parts required for the operation of a standpipe provided that a sprinkler is not connected

  2. Standpipe System Parts.  Replacement of parts required for the operation of a standpipe system that is not a combined standpipe system

Category 2

There is no standpipe work in this Category.

Limited Standpipe Alterations

Chapter 1 of the Administrative Code under §28-101.5 provides definition of Limited Standpipe Alterations, to specify repair to an existing combined standpipe system that is limited in scope falling into the following category:

Category 1

An alteration to an existing combined standpipe system where the total cost of the proposed work in the building does not exceed thirty five thousand dollars in any 12-month period and the proposed work is limited to one or more of the following:

  1. Replacement of parts required for the operation of a combined standpipe system; and

  2. Relocation of combined standpipe auxiliary hose sources and cabinets within 10 feet (3048 mm) of their original location, provided that the existing covered area is not affected and provided that such relocation complies with this code for a new installation.

Category 2

There is no Standpipe work in this Category.
