Jerika Richardson, Senior Advisor & Secretary to the Board

Jerika Richardson has over 15 years of experience in public administration, crisis communications, journalism, and production. She is currently Senior Advisor & Secretary to the Board for the nation’s largest, independent police oversight agency, the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). In this dual role, Ms. Richardson serves as the liaison for the Board and focuses on strategy, public education, and engagement for the agency—overseeing its Policy & Advocacy, Outreach & Intergovernmental Affairs, Communications, and Case Management units.

Prior to her work at the CCRB, Ms. Richardson served as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Counsel to the Mayor of New York City, where she supervised a team handling City Hall legal matters and a policy portfolio devoted to equity, access, and diversity. She began her tenure at the Mayor’s Office as a Special Advisor to Mayor Bill de Blasio focused on media relations and planning on criminal justice and public safety. From 2011-2014, Ms. Richardson worked for the Justice Department as the Senior Spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in the Southern District of New York, where she managed the public affairs team and high-profile press rollouts. After law school, she worked as a Field Producer & Off-Air Reporter for ABC News.

Additionally, Ms. Richardson regularly speaks about criminal justice and police accountability issues on panels, television, and radio. In 2018, she traveled to Macedonia to discuss rule of law and political and judicial reform as part of a bi-partisan delegation sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the American Council of Young Political Leaders.

Ms. Richardson was named among the 40 Under 40 in both the Spelman Messenger’s “Fierce and Fabulous” Phenomenal Women spread, and City & State’s Rising Stars. In 2014, she was selected as a Fellow for the Council of Urban Professionals and continues to work with the organization on diversity and leadership initiatives.

Ms. Richardson holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Spelman College.
