NYC Census Brings "Count the Heroes" to Queens

NEW YORK, N.Y., October 2 – NYC Census 2020’s multi-borough “Countdown to our Future” campaign is currently engaging in approximately 100 events to promote the census and provide census form assistance in a multitude of languages. Outreach includes a new “Count The Heroes” campaign, which aims to boost response rates among the healthcare workers who have kept New York safe and functioning throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. NYC Census 2020 will also join a branded  Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and Barclays Center “Make It Count” bus that will visit specific Brooklyn neighborhoods that are trailing in census completion and voter registration on Friday, Oct. 2. Aboard the bus will be Team Hype, part of the Nets on-court entertainment groups, to give away Nets and Liberty swag.

Media must RSVP to Sona Rai at srai@census.nyc.gov to attend and cover select public events. Additional events will be advised in the coming days.

These events come off the heels of new developments regarding the census count. Recently a federal judge issued a ruling preventing the Trump administration from ending the count by Sept. 30, a month before the scheduled, COVID-19-extended completion date of Oct. 31. On Sept. 30, the Ninth Circuit of Appeals decided to uphold the federal judge’s ruling. However, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross most recently announced Oct. 5 as a “target date” for ending all 2020 Census efforts, in defiance of the ruling. That’s why NYC Census 2020 and its partners will continue to mobilize to ensure that every New Yorker is counted right away.
