The Brooklyn Criminal Supreme and Family Court complex opened in 2005 as the largest courthouse in New York State. The 32-story building is located on Jay Street south of Johnson Street in Downtown Brooklyn. Construction began in 2001 and was completed at a cost of $670 million.

The courthouse consolidates all of Brooklyn’s Criminal Supreme and Family Courts. It contains 84 courtrooms and is the home of one of the country’s largest drug treatment courts. The courtrooms were designed with state-of-the-art technology, including full wireless online connections and teleconferencing capabilities that allow inmates in City jails to make court appearances remotely.

The building’s size allows for greater public access to public services by combining court and human services functions under one roof. City and state agencies sharing space in the complex include the Departments of Correction, Juvenile Justice, and Probation, the State Office of Children and Family Services, and several non-profit organizations that provide ancillary services to the courts.

The new courthouse was developed through a unique public-private partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The building was built as a commercial condominium with the city leasing and then exercising its option to buy the court portion of the building. Under this agreement the top five floors are retained for private use.
