Long Island City, NY – The NYC Department of Design and Construction’s (DDC) STEAM education initiative, in conjunction with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), announced today it is accepting applications for its upcoming summer internship programs.
The agency will select 30 students from public and private high schools across the five boroughs to participate in a six-week summer internship program that will provide students an opportunity to explore careers in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction, design, law, business administration, and finance from the perspective of the public sector.
DDC will also offer a ten-week paid summer internship program for college and graduate students to gain hands-on technical experience and a mentoring relationship with senior-level staff.
Each intern will be assigned to a personal mentor in an agency division. Assignments will be in divisions including administration, architecture and engineering, community partnerships and STEAM initiatives, infrastructure, office of the chief architect, law/general counsel’s office, program management, and public buildings. Work in these areas may include the use of Auto-CAD and REVIT drafting for students interested in architecture or engineering, internet research, word processing, spreadsheet creation, and other clerical work.
“Our summer internship programs are structured to expose students to the challenges of upgrading and constructing the City’s public building and infrastructure. Since 2014, over 85 students have built mentoring relationships with our staff and we are exciting to attracting more professionals to these fields this summer,” said DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora.
“Our prior interns have left a greatly positive impression on DDC staff,” said Lee Llambelis, DDC Deputy Commissioner for Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives. “Mentors witnessed their interns expand their knowledge of the design and construction fields, and develop important business skills such as networking and public speaking. It is an opportunity for young people to explore the world of the built environment. We are excited to see what this year’s interns will learn from their experience in the summer program.”
DDC’s 2016 summer internship program provided high school and college students an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about the built environment, improve their networking and collaboration skills, and the chance to present their design projects to design and construction professionals.
Interns also expanded their construction knowledge by exploring six active DDC worksites to witness first-hand how New York City’s public spaces transition from the drawing board to physical construction. They also participated in a community service day at JHS 22, alongside the Summer Enrichment Program participants, where interns contributed to the beautification of the school through activities such as neighborhood gardening, and mural painting.
Applications for the high school internship program will be accepted until March 31, 2017. The students must reside in New York City and must be at least 16 years of age and eligible to work in the United States with working papers. The six-week internship begins July 5, 2017 and ends August 11, 2017.
Applications for the college and graduate summer internship program must be completed by March 17, 2017. Undergraduate students must be matriculated in an accredited college or must be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the program year). Graduate students must be currently in a graduate program in an accredited college, university, or law school. The ten-week program begins June 5, 2017 and ends on August 11, 2017.
