(Long Island City, NY – December 18, 2020) Commissioner Lorraine Grillo of the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced today that DDC’s renovation of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Chelsea Health Clinic at 303 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan has been selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to receive its Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award. Awards were presented during a virtual ceremony to distinguished recipients “whose skill and determination have given new meaning to their communities through preservation of our architectural and cultural heritage.”

“The Chelsea Health Clinic played a historic role in the City’s efforts to control the HIV pandemic and to this day is a leading center for primary care in the neighborhood,” said DDC Commissioner Lorraine Grillo. “We are very grateful for the recognition by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and I thank our staff plus our design consultants for making this honor possible.”

During the $26.3 million renovation, the interior of the Clinic was crafted to maximize exposure to Chelsea Park and features curved wood ceilings, porcelain tile floors, green glass mosaic walls and earthen tones that resemble textures and colors found in the park immediately outside. The renovation included the replacement of 155 windows and frames, the installation of a new HVAC system, intrusion alarm systems, an internal communication system, energy efficient lighting throughout the interior and exterior, new audio and visual equipment, an emergency generator with fuel tank and upgraded plumbing and electrical systems. Fire protection was enhanced with a new fire alarm and upgraded fire stairwell.

DDC’s renovation of the clinic was completed in March 2018. It was funded by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and designed for DDC by Stephen Yablon Architecture.
