Bloomingdale Library Reopens with Interior Renovations and New Teen Room

(New York, NY – August 19, 2021) The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) today announced the completion of a $3 million project at The New York Public Library’s Bloomingdale branch on the Upper West Side which created a new dedicated Teen Room at the branch, upgraded its restrooms and brought the library into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The project was managed by DDC for NYPL.

Work began in February 2019 and was paused temporarily during the pandemic. The branch reopened last month, when the renovation was unveiled to the public for the first time.

“The renovations at Bloomingdale Library make the library more accessible and even more inviting for teens, where they now have a separate area that’s acoustically isolated from the rest of the library,” said Thomas Foley, DDC’s Deputy Commissioner for Public Buildings. “I’d like to thank the DDC team that finished this project even while working through the difficult conditions created by the pandemic.”

Located at 150 West 100th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, the Bloomingdale Library’s staff librarian and reference offices were relocated to make room for a new semi-glass enclosed Teen Room at the southern end of the first floor. The new Teen Room is acoustically insulated and features new lighting and shelving; new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and ductwork; new floors and ceilings; and modern smoke detectors connected to the building’s main fire alarm system.

The second floor now features three new ADA-compliant restrooms, with new fixtures, new floors and ceilings, a new janitor’s work area and associated piping and insulation. The staff office, librarian’s office and reference office were also relocated inside the building, with the branch manager’s office now located behind the circulation desk to maximize usable space for library patrons.
