For Community Service Day, the Department of Design and Construction’s 30 high school and 44 college interns traveled to Midland Beach on Staten Island. The event was a collaboration between DDC and New York’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Midland Beach and the surrounding community were affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and rebuilding efforts are ongoing.
The community service project focused on beautifying the gardens surrounding the Sea Turtle Fountain and sprinklers, a beloved gathering place for the local community. The college and high school interns worked together with the NYC Parks staff and DDC Program Coordinators to de-weed and mulch the gardens. The interns also learned about other rebuilding and beautification efforts that the DDC and NYC Parks have carried out at the beach and in the surrounding Staten Island neighborhood. The interns finished their day of service and team-building with a refreshing run through the sprinklers on the plaza.
