NYC DDC High School Interns Participate in a College & Financial Aid 101 Workshop

On Monday July 17, 2017, the NYC Department of Design and Construction High School Interns participated in a workshop led by DDC STEAM Deputy Director Sandrine Fermino, College Aide Suellen Fonseca, and Summer College Intern Joyce Chan. Informational workshops are a fundamental component of the High School Summer Internship Program. During these workshops interns receive both academic and professional guidance.

The first half of the College & Financial Aid 101 workshop focused on the various types of colleges, as well as the tools necessary tools to navigate the college application process. The second half of the workshop provided students with essential information regarding the complex financial aid process. Speakers highlighted the importance of completing the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) form in a timely manner, and discussed various types of loans, grants, and scholarships available to students to help defray the cost of a college education and school related expenses.

The High School interns were extremely inquisitive about the college application process. They also shared advice they had received from their own school counselors, and from their own experiences. Interns left the workshop much more confident about their ability to navigate the complex college selection and financial aid application process.
