October 30, 2018

On October 30, 2018, the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and The School Construction Authority (SCA) completed the second meeting of ACE Team 8; an affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program of America. ACE Team 8, led by the DDC STEAM Initiatives team recruited students from Staten Island, Far Rockaway, Brooklyn, Richmond Hill, Astoria, Corona, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Flushing, Long Island City, Jamaica, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. ACE Team 8 also registered 14 mentor Engineers, Architects and Construction Managers from DDC, SCA, and AECOM.

The ACE Mentor Program helps prepare high school students for careers in design and construction. It is the fastest-growing mentoring program in the building construction industry, ACE operates in over 40 states and 200 cities across the nation.

Meeting for the second time, Team 8 was presented with a Community Health Clinic challenge that required them to design a blueprint of an imagined community health clinic. The structure was required to have at least 6 Intensive Care or Non-Intensive Care clinic rooms. Team 8 was also asked to use the blueprint to construct a physical model. Team 8 successfully completed the project and during the presentation explained the design and specific features of their respective structures.

ACE Team 8 mentors used this activity to prepare the students for the upcoming selection of the Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT) challenge. Over the course of the upcoming weeks TEAM 8 students will continue to explore additional challenges from the ACE CIRT competition.
