CAMBA

Founded in 1977, CAMBA is a multi-service agency that provides community-based programming including infant and maternal health, family support, and youth development programs. For more than 20 years, CAMBA has provided quality shelter services under contract with the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS). Our extensive experience informs our holistic and strength-based approach to shelter services. CAMBA runs ten shelters, five for families and five for single adults located in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. We ensure the facilities are safe, clean, and secure, and clients are treated with respect and dignity.  We work with shelter clients to have them understand that homelessness does not define who they are, rather it is an extremely difficult point in their lives, when they don’t have a home to live in. We offer comprehensive support services to build stable, independent and self-sufficient futures including job training, employment services, parenting education, mental health screening, substance abuse treatment, and referrals to rehabilitation facilities.

CAMBA’s Respite Bed Program is the connection between a network of faith-based respite sites and clients of The Gathering Place, a homeless drop-in center. The respite sites provide temporary overnight beds in houses of worship for clients who are homeless. Clients also receive case management, medical and psychiatric evaluation, treatment and meals, and housing placement services at The Gathering Place. The program staff work closely with the volunteer coordinators at the churches and synagogues that recruit and train other volunteers to provide overnight shelter complete with a home cooked meal and a clean and secure environment.

Homelessness prevention is key to keeping people in permanent, stable housing. CAMBA has prevented thousands of families from becoming homeless through our mobile YOU CAN VAN and DHS’s HomeBase program and Eviction Prevention Unit, and the Tenant Support Services funded by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Services include job training and job placement, informal and formal mediation, budget counseling and advocacy, including referrals to Public Assistance, legal and other emergency and supportive services to ensure clients remain housed and stable, avoiding the shelter system.

CAMBA also provides on-site supportive services at developments built by our nonprofit affiliate CAMBA Housing Ventures (CHV), which develops sustainable, award-winning permanent supportive and affordable housing for low-income individuals and families, including those who were formerly homeless.  In addition, CAMBA provides supportive services for over 30 affordable housing residences for those living with chronic illnesses, including HIV/AIDS, mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders.
