DOC Launches New Data Dashboard with Key Agency Indicators

DOC Data Dashboard

East Elmhurst, NY: To modernize operations and increase transparency for the public, the New York City Department of Correction today announces the launch of its new DOC Data Dashboard, which will provide everyone who seeks more knowledge of the agency with facts and statistical information to track our progress towards a more humane and safer jail system.

DOC’s Data Dashboard will streamline the delivery of information to the public about key statistical indicators – the very same data that our correction professionals use every day to track important metrics that help them understand trends taking place within the jails.

“This is a major step forward in our goal of transparency in our operations as we continue to modernize our jails,” said DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina. “This dashboard, accessible to all in the public who are interested, should further connect us in a meaningful way with the communities and the people we serve.”

The metrics include average daily uniform headcount, average daily population, time in custody of current population, jail admissions and discharges, and numbers of staff who are on sick leave and on modified duty.

Additionally, the department will voluntarily release additional metrics related to safety and security. These measurements include Uses of Force, Assaults on Staff, slashings and stabbings, number of fights among persons in custody, and more in the future.

While some of these metrics are currently available on DOC’s Open Data site, the Dashboard is meant to present information in a more accessible and visual way and enhance ease-of-use. The Dashboard was created from the recently formed DOC Office of Management and Planning Analysis (OMAP). OMAP was created to enhance the agency’s ability to analyze and use data in its decision-making process to improve facility operations.

The Dashboard is accessible on the DOC website through our Statistics and Compliance page, under the “Additional Reports” menu.

Data on the DOC Data Dashboard goes back in some cases as much as five years, depending on the metric. Many of the categories of statistics that are part of the dashboard will be updated monthly.  We will continue to monitor and evaluate the Dashboard to improve the user experience.
