Carriage Horse Driver's Course

Learn more about horses working in NYC.

All New York City carriage horse drivers must have a basic knowledge of horse health care, emergency care of horses, proper harnessing, safe driving, and the laws that apply to them. The carriage horse driver's course consists of self-study, classroom videos, and both written and practical examinations. Each participant must successfully pass all examinations to be issued a certificate of completion.

A certificate of course completion is required to apply for the horse driver's license from the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. Additionally, a horse drawn carriage operator must hold a current valid motor vehicle driver's license (issued in the USA) to enroll in the carriage driver training program.
