The Food Protection Course trains individuals in food protection practices to ensure the safety of the food served in New York City's food establishments. The NYC Health Code requires that there be at least one supervisor certified in food protection on site any time a food service establishment and non-retail food processing establishment is operating. Completion of this course and passing of the final exam satisfies that requirement.
At this time, the in-person Food Protection Course is not being offered but you still have the opportunity to complete the course and be certified in food protection.
The Health Academy now provides the 5-day food protection course and final exam in a virtual classroom setting.
Frequency and Duration: The course is 15 hours long and is given over five days and each daily session is three hours long. It will usually start on Monday and end on Friday.
When Monday is a City holiday, classes begin on Tuesday, end on Friday, and each daily session will be three hours and 45 minutes long.
The course and exam will be offered via the WebEx application. You can register for the course here. When you pass the final exam, you will be issued a temporary Food Protection Certificate.
