COVID-19: Data

Public Health Milestones

New York City is closely monitoring key public health signs to determine when certain social (physical) distancing restrictions will be lifted for people who are not at high risk for serious complications of COVID-19.

The timing of when to remove or reinstate social (physical) distancing and other policies to slow the spread of COVID-19 will depend in part on trends in:

  • Hospital admissions
  • Critical care capacity
  • Positive test rates (the ideal levels may change depending on the availability of testing supplies)

The above signs are also called indicators. If an indicator reaches a certain pre-determined level, or milestone, it will show that the spread of COVID-19 may be slowing. Once all of these indicators reach their milestones, the City will likely begin to lift restrictions gradually.

The NYC Health Department will continue to report additional data on our other data webpages, including the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in NYC.
