Referring Deaths to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME)

OCME investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident (including drug intoxication), by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, as a complication of a therapy, or in any suspicious or unusual manner. If a physician suspects or has determined that an external factor contributed to the death, whether within days of the death or years prior to the death, they must consult the medical examiner to determine appropriate jurisdiction of the case. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the Help Desk.
