Responding to Dog Bites

If you have been bitten by a dog, take action:

  • If a dog poses an immediate danger to you or others call 911
  • Always get the dog owner's contact information: name, address and number
  • If the dog is unknown, get information for any person that may be able to identify the dog
  • Wash the bite wound with soap and water
  • Seek attention from your medical provider to determine care based on your situation
  • Report the bite to the Department of Health or call 311. Information reported assists the Health Department to determine if the biting dog is healthy ten days after the bite in order to avoid unnecessary rabies shots.
