The Neighborhood Health Action Centers provide health and wellness services in Harlem, as part of New York City’s effort to promote health equity.


Action Center Resources

Lactation Room

This room will provide a safe and comfortable space for mothers to breastfeed or nurse their babies. To learn more, drop in and speak with the Family Wellness Suite team at the Harlem Action Center.

East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence

The Center provides asthma counselors to help children aged 17 and younger who reside in East and Central Harlem and have poorly controlled asthma.

SMART Live! Virtual Programming

Class videos are on SMART's Facebook page or website.

Anyone interested in becoming a SMART participant can contact Tara Pierce tara.pierce@smartuniversity.org to set up an intake interview.

Family Wellness Suite

We can refer you to services that will help you and your family avoid eviction, enroll in health insurance and find employment.

Pregnancy services include childbirth education and newborn care classes, parenting classes, infant massage, reproductive health workshops and referrals.

ABC Children’s Mobile Crisis Team

Responds to an active crisis situation anywhere in Manhattan within two hours. Crisis teams work 24/7, are free of charge and serve all children and adolescents up to age 20.

ABC In Good Hands

Connects infants and young children with a team of mental health professionals specializing in screening for Early Intervention and Special Education eligibility, psychoeducation, evaluations and system navigation support.

Family Storytime

Join the Family Wellness Suite, Aguilar New York Public Library, and Literacy Inc. for story time followed by sensory exploration activities, songs and play. Open to infants to toddlers.

Peer Support Group (in Spanish)

A monthly gathering from the comfort of your own home with peers to converse about various topics of interest.

SMART Health Outreach Tabling

A Community Resource for Health Information and Support.

Breastfeeding 101

Open to expecting moms and their support person. In this class you will learn about topics like colostrum, milk supply and breastfeeding positions. This class includes a prenatal yoga session, breastfeeding informational material and a goodie bag.

Community Conversations

An opportunity for East Harlem residents to share insights, ideas, and engaging activities in an interactive workshop. There will be educational activities, gifts, health awareness and health education.

Join us for a day filled with on-site services available to the East Harlem community, particularly the Newest New Yorkers.

Scamming Awareness for Seniors Workshop

A workshop brought to you by the Carter Burden Network in collaboration with HHAP to bring scamming awareness to older adults.

Black Maternal Health Week

Join us for programming dedicated to expecting and new moms. Practice self-care with activities including art therapy and yoga. Open to mothers and caregivers.

Mothering the Mother

A support group for moms. Share stories, exchange tips and find the support you need on your parenting journey. Knowledgeable and friendly staff along with local organizations will be available to answer any questions you may have and offer guidance on various topics related to early childhood development.

Weekly Services and Activities

GrowNYC P.S. 57 Farmstand

Buy products like fresh, locally-grown vegetables, fruits, eggs, honey and bread. Spend $2 in SNAP/EBT/P-EBT, get a bonus $2 in Health Bucks, up to $10 per day.

Insurance Enrollment Counselors

Get low- or no-cost insurance. Services are provided in multiple languages and regardless of immigration status.

Crib and Car Seat Distribution

Families can get a car seat or safe sleep surface for their infant, if they need one.

  • Car seat distribution: April 11 and 25, English: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Spanish: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Safe Sleep Surface distribution: By appointment only
    • For infants newborn to 6 months.

NYC Mommies Club (Breastfeeding Support Group)

This support group is for people who are breastfeeding. Trained professionals will provide practical breastfeeding support, such as help with latching and breast milk supply, and answer questions.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Distribution

Adults (age 18 and up) who smoke or vape and want to quit or cut back can get:

  • Brief coaching sessions
  • A free one-month supply of tobacco treatment medications (such as nicotine patches and lozenges)
  • Educational materials

PHS’ HHAP Virtual Walking Group

A weekly walk to get the heart rate up from the comfort of your own home.

Maternal Yoga

This class teaches movements and yoga poses to strengthen and tone the muscles and organs needed for labor and delivery and alleviate common discomforts of pregnancy.

Caregiver Hour: Baby Social Time

Mingle with other caregivers and use the space for your baby playdates. Program participants can use our play yards, baby bouncer, activity playmat and toys.

Healing Circles (In-Person)

Bi-weekly workshops offering mental health support for postpartum depression, grief and loss from licensed therapists. Register through Eventbrite:

Circle of Security (Virtual)

Learn how to support, understand and respond to your child's behaviors and emotions, and decrease stress. Explore how past uncomfortable feelings and experiences influence parenting and relationships. Register through Eventbrite:

At the Legal Hand Call-In Center serving East Harlem, trained community volunteers, who are not lawyers, provide free legal information, assistance, and referrals. This service can help you with issues that affect your life, in areas like employment, housing, family, immigration, domestic violence, and public benefits. Legal Hand can help you prevent problems from turning into legal cases.

Single Stop Free Tax Prep

Prepare and E-file your taxes with an IRS VITA Certified Volunteer. You must have an appointment and an active email address to receive your appointment confirmation and reminders. You must always wear a mask during your appointment.
