NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT BRINGS MOBILE OFFICE TO STATEN ISLAND ON AUGUST 18

NYC Emergency Management is opening mobile offices throughout all five boroughs in the month of August

August 17, 2015 – New York City Emergency Management officials will visit Staten Island on Tuesday, August 18, to discuss emergency preparedness, coordination, and planning with residents. NYC Emergency Management staff members will open a mobile office at Staten Island Borough Hall from 11 AM to 3 PM, and will give residents the opportunity to learn more about the agency’s role in educating and preparing New Yorkers for emergencies. With the 2015 hurricane season well underway, emergency managers will provide tips to help the community prepare for hurricane season.

"NYC Emergency Management works tirelessly every day to keep New Yorkers safe and informed," said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito. "Our mobile office hours are a new way for New Yorkers to meet and get to know the emergency managers coordinating emergency responses in New York City."

"We are happy to host the NYC Emergency Management mobile office at Borough Hall. This is a great opportunity for Staten Islanders to learn how to prepare and stay safe during all kinds of emergencies and ask experts any questions they may have," said Borough President James Oddo. "Information is power, and it is important to have a plan, particularly during emergency situations, so I encourage Staten Islanders to take advantage of this unique opportunity to talk directly with the emergency management experts."

"I strongly encourage Staten Islanders to stop by Borough Hall on August 18th, even if just for a few minutes to pick up some literature or ask a question or two about the city's emergency plans and how to keep your family safe in the event of an emergency," said City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo. "We learned some hard lessons from Hurricane Sandy, and even from the recent blackout, about how critically important it is to know who to call, where to go, and what to do to when disaster strikes."

"This is a great way to get the community informed about emergency preparedness," said State Senator Diane J. Savino, who represents the 23rd District of New York City. "When Hurricane Sandy occurred a number of my constituents were not prepared. It's with events and classes such as these that will ensure that individuals not only know what to expect but how to react during emergencies, which could ultimately save a life. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity."

"We know all too well on Staten Island that community preparedness and pro-activeness is key in guarding against a future disaster," said Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis. "I encourage everyone to make it over to the mobile office and take advantage of the free information available. Each well-informed, well-prepared resident is an asset during an emergency and can make the difference between life and death for a neighbor or a loved one."

NYC Emergency Management staff members will be on hand to distribute a range of emergency preparedness materials. New Yorkers are encouraged to stop by to learn how to be prepared for any emergency, including steps to make a plan, gather supplies, and stay informed. Residents will also learn how they can join New York City Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), a program consisting of more than 2,000 volunteers dedicated to helping their communities during emergencies.

NYC Emergency Management’s mobile office visited Monsignor Del Valle Square in Hunts Point, The Bronx, on August 4, the Red Hook Library in Brooklyn on August 6, Rockaway Beach, Queens, on August 12, and Joyce Kilmer Park in The Bronx on August 14. The upcoming mobile offices will be held from 11AM to 3 PM at the following locations:

  • August 18: Staten Island, St. George (Staten Island Borough Hall, Stuyvesant Street and Borough Place)
  • August 25: Manhattan, Harlem (Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard)

All Mobile Office locations are accessible. For those interested in our preparedness materials for people with vision loss, NYC Emergency Management staff will have tablets on site to demonstrate large print and audio options, as well as other accessible features of our materials. ASL interpretation will be available at all Mobile Office events.
