NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ISSUES HAZARDOUS TRAVEL ADVISORY THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING

Scattered snow showers and gusty winds could limit visibility and create hazardous travel throughout the day

Wind advisory in effect for NYC from 12 p.m. through midnight

January 8, 2020 — The New York City Emergency Management Department today issued a hazardous travel advisory through Wednesday evening. According to National Weather Service, there is the potential for scattered snow showers and gusty winds that may reduce visibility and create hazardous travel throughout today. Snow squalls are also possible. 

A snow squall is a sudden, intense period of moderate to heavy blowing snow lasting around 30 minutes to 1 hour. These squalls produce strong wind gusts that may cause brief whiteout conditions, limiting visibility and making travel extremely dangerous.

National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for NYC in effect from 12 p.m. today through midnight, with sustained winds 15 to 25 mph, and gusts up to 50 mph.

New Yorkers should plan for hazardous travel conditions and are advised to exercise caution and consider taking public transportation. If you are traveling through a snow squall turn on headlights, drive slowly, and exercise caution. Consider avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes.
