NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT’S LATEST ‘PREP TALK’ PODCAST: 
BUILDING OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PEOPLE

February 10, 2020 — Equity of opportunity is key to building a strong economy. In recognition of Black History Month, the latest episode of “Prep Talk” features Gregg Bishop, commissioner for the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS). Commissioner Bishop discusses his role in creating a more vibrant, inclusive economy and his dedication to forging opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses (M/WBEs). In addition to business development, Commissioner Bishop highlights his agency’s commitment to equipping New Yorkers with contemporary technical skills to compete in today’s evolving workforce. He also emphasizes the importance of forging relationships with businesses to help them prepare for, respond to, and quickly recover from, an emergency. Profile 

Gregg Bishop is the commissioner at New York City’s Department of Small Business Services (SBS). In his role, he helps unlock economic potential and create economic security for all New Yorkers by connecting them to good jobs, creating stronger businesses, and building thriving neighborhoods across the five boroughs.  Born in Grenada and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, Bishop formerly served as deputy commissioner of SBS’ business development division from 2012 to 2015. Bishop also served as assistant commissioner of the division of economic and financial opportunity at SBS, where he was responsible for overseeing parts of the M/WBE program.

Bishop graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida A&M University and received a master’s degree in integrated marketing and management communication from Florida State University. He studied international management and marketing in Tokyo, Japan, and is a graduate of Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government program, and the Coro Foundation’s Leadership New York.
