The first episode of ¡Prepárate! focuses on the Atlantic hurricane season

June 3, 2021 – The New York City Emergency Management Department has launched ¡Prepárate!, a monthly Spanish-language podcast series that will engage listeners with emergency management topics. Listen as podcast hosts Inés Bebea, deputy press secretary and Yokarina Duarte, director of intergovernmental relations from NYC Emergency Management, talk with guests who keep our city safe and prepared before, during, and after emergencies. The first episode coincides with the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and features Jose Otero, a detective with the New York City Police Department and member of the Urban Search & Rescue – New York Task Force 1’s rescue squad.

“We are very excited to have another messaging tool to engage with our Spanish-speaking Neoyorquinos to help them be prepared for emergencies,” said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner John Scrivani. “As we prepare for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, it is important that all New Yorkers have the necessary supplies in case of a power outage, have a plan for their family and business, and know if they live in an evacuation zone.”

¡Prepárate! is the second podcast under New York City Emergency Management. Its first podcast, “Prep Talk” premiered in December 2017, just in time to help New Yorkers prepare for the Winter season.  In addition to discussing emergency management topics, ¡Prepárate! will also interview experts that can speak to the different emergencies and how they are perceived in Spanish-speaking households.

You can listen to ¡Prepárate! on SoundCloud, and subscribe now to stay up-to-date on the latest episodes.

Tips to prepare for hurricane season:

Make a Plan

  • Make sure your emergency plan is ready and all members of your household are familiar with how to contact one another in an emergency.
  • Prepare your Go Bag by adding water, nonperishable food, copies of important documents, and medications.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit for your home that has enough supplies for up to seven days. You may wish to include additional items, such as extra blankets, additional clothing, and a battery-operated radio to monitor weather conditions during a storm.
