April 11, 2022 — The New York City Emergency Management Department welcomes Commissioner Zach Iscol. Commissioner Iscol brings a wealth of knowledge to the agency. As a United States Marine, he served two tours in Iraq, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. He later helped build many of the components of the Marine Corps’ first special operations command and deployed one of the first Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) overseas. Over the past decade, Iscol has built and led businesses and a nonprofit mental healthcare provider, the Headstrong Project, which provides free mental healthcare to veterans and service members in more than 30 cities. He also served as the deputy director of the Joint New York Medical Station in New York City where he led several local, state, and federal agencies at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the latest episode of “Prep Talk,” Commissioner Iscol discusses his experiences, expectations, and what he is looking forward to the most in his new role. Commissioner Iscol also chats about what sparked his interest in the emergency management field, what keeps him up at night, and his leadership approach.

“Government only works when it works together,” Commissioner Zach Iscol said. “When you are faced with a disaster, it could be a hurricane or being evacuated from a subway tunnel and you are affected and you’re looking for the government to help, you don’t say, ‘that’s the federal government, that’s the state government.’ It’s all the same to you, you’re just looking for people to help. That is why [building] partnerships with the community are incredibly important.”
