Engagement Teams Unite

Tuesday, November 28, 2023, the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) and the NYC Mayor’s Office of Engagement co-lead a bi-monthly, in-person meeting of citywide engagement/outreach teams for a group exercise on the history of New York. In discussion groups explored equity, root causes of disparities, how to assess crucial data, and how to engage communities with racial awareness.

NYC KidsRISE and the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice Uplift the Inaugural NYC Public Schools Alumni Community Scholarships Announcement

Friday, December 8, 2023, Chief Equity Officer & NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice Commissioner Sideya Sherman oined alumni from NYC Department of Education and second graders at P.S. 92 Mary McLeod Bethune in Harlem to announce the inaugural #NYCPublicSchoolsAlumni Community Scholarships for first and second graders in the #SaveForCollege Program!

Spanning 30 elementary schools in all five boroughs and across diverse neighborhoods—from the South Bronx to Sunset Park and Washington Heights and Brownsville—together, we're sending a clear message to our youngest New Yorkers that we believe in them, and the many avenues of achievement possible for all students.

Alumni across New York City can help jumpstart the college and career dreams of students at their former elementary schools through NYC Kids RISE. Nearly every 1st + 2nd grader in #NYCSchools has an NYC Scholarship Account for college + career training and kindergartners will be able to activate + view theirs this January. 2023 City Year New York Equity Summit

November 7, 2023, Chief Equity Officer (CEO) & Commissioner Sideya Sherman joined City Year New York (CYNY) as the keynote speaker for the first City Year New York Equity Summit. With a full house, and an engaged audience of future public servants, Commissioner Sherman shared her vision for what an equitable and fairer New York City looks like for all New Yorkers. Lift Off! #CannabisNYC Listening and Learning Tour

On Thursday, September 7, 2023, NYC Mayor's Office of Equity Commissioner Sideya Sherman joined New York City's Sheriff Anthony Miranda, NYC's Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Kevin Kim, and other city officials at the Lift Off! Cannabis NYC Listening & Learning Tour stop in Staten Island. Hosted by SBS, this resource fair and growers showcase educated, engaged, and empowered New Yorkers to get involved with the legal cannabis industry.

SYEP Pride Event- The Stonewall Inn

On Thursday, August 10, 2023, participants from the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development's SYEP program were able to experience LGBTQ+ history at the Stonewall Inn. In a heartfelt meet and greet, the owners talked about the Stonewall uprising's significance, focusing on its pivotal role in sparking the LGBTQ+ liberation movement. Through this collaboration with the NYC Unity Project, attendees didn't just learn about LGBTQ+ rights – they connected deeply with the ongoing struggle for equality. Events like this bridge the gap between the past and present, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future.

SYEP Pride + Unity Walking Tour

On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the Unity Project and its Acting Executive Director Ronald Porcelli invited SYEP participants to venture through some of NYC's most pivotal LGBTQ landmarks. Guided by Ken Lustbader of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, the tour began at Christopher Park, opposite the famed Stonewall Inn. From revisiting the 1966 "Sip-In" at Julius' Bar to the birthplace of the 1970 NYC Pride March, attendees explored key sites that shaped our LGBTQ history. A powerful reminder of the foundations of Pride and the importance of preserving these stories for the next generation.

SYEP Pride's Immersive Experience at the Alice Austen House

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, members of NYC Department of Youth & Community Development's SYEP program learned more about LGBTQ+ history at the Alice Austen House (AAH). In collaboration with the American LGBTQ+ Museum, attendees were introduced to the 'Queer Ecologies Garden' project—a beautiful mix of AAH's heritage and the New York Restoration Project's commitment to inclusion. The day created excitement for the future of the American LGBTQ+ Museum, set to open its doors in 2026. The tour ended with participants using their creativity for a cyanotype art project, like the style of iconic American photographer, Alice Austen. Through events like this, we remember the past and look forward with hope.

SYEP Pride Event with Disney

On Monday August 7, 2023, the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, NYC Unity Project, and the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development partnered with Disney for the "SYEP Pride Event with Disney." This gathering served as a festive part of the ongoing celebration of the 60th year anniversary of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and its continuous efforts to support NYC youth, with a new focus on the LGBTQ+ community through strategic Pride initiatives. The 'SYEP Pride Event with Disney' panel featured an opening keynote from NYC Mayor's Office of Equity Commissioner Sideya Sherman where she delivered remarks, underscoring the city's commitment to such impactful programs like SYEP in paving a brighter future for the next generation of New Yorkers. The event was expertly moderated by NYC Unity Project acting director Ronald Porcelli and Disney Theatrical Group Engagement Coordinator Kiara Brown-Clark. The discussion featured key figures from Disney's theatrical team: Kendra Moore, company manager; Seth Stuhl, VP of Business Affairs & Legal Counsel; James Bruenger-Arreguin, executive assistant; and Michael James Scott, who portrays "The Genie" in Disney's "Aladdin" on Broadway.

NYC Kids RISE Rings the Opening Bell at NYSE

On August 3, 2023, to mark the achievement that nearly every eligible student in New York City public schools now has an NYC Scholarship Account through the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program, the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity joined NYC Kids RISE in ringing The Opening Bell® at the New York Stock Exchange. This momentous event underscored NYC's deep commitment to the education and financial readiness of its youth. Standing in unity were prominent organizations, including the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, NYC Department of Education, and Bloomberg Philanthropies' Greenwood Initiative. With representatives from government, education, business, faith, and community sectors in attendance, the day illuminated the city's collective determination and vision for a brighter, inclusive future.

Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Release "A Blueprint for Community Safety"

On Monday, July 31, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced the 'Blueprint for Community Safety', a robust $485 million strategy aimed at fostering safer, more resilient communities in NYC. This initiative embodied New York City's commitment to reducing gun violence, pursuing equity-driven solutions and the ongoing hard work of the New York City Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Two million individuals gathered in Midtown Manhattan to participate in the 2023 Pride March, demonstrating their unwavering support for New York City's vibrant LGBTQIA+ community. The streets were filled with a lively crowd of New Yorkers and visitors, coming together in celebration of the city's diversity and inclusivity.

2023 Juneteenth GBP

Saturday, June 24, 2023, the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, the Office of the Queens Borough President, the NYC Mayor's Office of Food Policy, the NYC Mayor's Office of Urban Agriculture and others partnered to honor Juneteenth and Queens' rich African American history and culture. Here, healthy lifestyles were encouraged with a focus on real-life, equity driven practices and an acknowledgement of the lack of healthy food access across BIPOC communities.

Thursday, June 23, 2023, Commissioner Sideya Sherman, NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, delivered remarks about the importance of uplifting and celebrating Juneteenth. In attendance was Mayor Adams, Commissioner Laurie Cumbo, and Ben Haith, the creator of the Juneteenth flag. This flag raising commemorated the first time the Juneteenth flag has ever been raised at Bowling Green Park in lower Manhattan.

Reimagining Public Health for NYC: A Discussion on the Racial Wealth Gap and Health Equity

Tuesday, Feb 28, Commissioner Sideya Sherman, NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, spoke about the racial wealth gap on the Reimagining Public Health for New York City panel hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. During the discussion, panelists explored the connection between health and wealth, how to better measure outcomes, and how policy could help to address racial wealth gaps.

Washington Heights Teach-In Event with the NYC Racial Justice Commission

Saturday, October 29, the NYC Racial Justice Commission held a 'Washington Heights Teach-In' event to entertain and inform the community. The 2022 NYC Equity Summit

Tuesday, October 25 The Mayor's Office of Equity hosted the inaugural 2022 NYC Equity Summit at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. This event convened over 200+ cross-sector leaders convened to develop forwarding-thinking strategies to advance equity for New York City. Tuesday, October 11, Commissioner Sideya Sherman was joined by NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat, and many others on the historic steps of City Hall. MOE Volunteering w/ Green City Force (CFG)

Friday, September 9, Commissioner Sideya Sherman and MOE Staff volunteered with Green City Force (GCF), a non-profit organization that engages with young, NYCHA-housed, adults between the ages of 18-24 encouraging community impact, and career pathway training related to the green economy. Together, MOE staff painted asphalt, weeded and aerated the beds in preparations for GCF's next crops.

Thursday, June 30 at 6pm As the culmination to a festive PRIDE month, Mayor Eric Adams, the Mayor's Office of Equity and the NYC Unity Project volunteered in the East Village with the Ali Forney Center at the Bea Arthur Residence. The Ali Forney Center is a renowned non-profit serving LGBTQ+ runaway and homeless youth, and the Bea Arthur Residence is a transitional living program designed to prepare homeless LGBTQ+ youth for successfully living alone.

The Mayor's Office of Equity Announces Nearly $6.7 Million Investment for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers

Friday, June 17 at 10am Mayor Eric Adams, the Mayor's Office of Equity, the NYC Unity Project and the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development, announced an investment of nearly $6.7 million to provide new and expanded services for the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is a time for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers to celebrate who they are, their hard-won victories, and their extraordinary resilience and brilliance. During Pride and every other month, New York City remains committed to ensuring LGBTQ+ New Yorkers are safe, healthy, and supported while fulfilling its historic legacy. These new services provide wide-ranging support that include first-of-its-kind funding for capacity building of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC)/non-binary (NB)-led nonprofits, legal services, and support for homeless youth.

The Mayor's Office of Equity Expanded the Save for College Program


Friday, May 13 at 8am Mayor Eric Adams, the Mayor's Office of Equity, the NYC Dept. of Education and NYC KidsRISE have expanded the Save for College Program across all NYC boroughs. In celebration of NYC Scholarship Month, important local and educational leadership gathered to ring in the momentous occasion at P.S.169 in The Bronx. NYC families can now activate their kindergarteners' NYC Scholarship Accounts and begin investing in children's futures – regardless of their family's income or immigration status.
